August brings ‘The Herd’. At the height of summer, sheep and lambs are now almost fully grown, gathered together they roam in their calm, slow-living way, grazing in the bright sunshine. One follows another in a straight line, the sociable way sheep automatically do! They bleat happily across open fields, staring at me warily while I sketch their faces head on. Sheep are gentle, sensitive creatures, emotionally complex with underestimated intelligence. When in a large field altogether, they will rarely come near but in a smaller area, it is amazing how friendly they can be.
